The semi-final and final rounds of the matchplay championships took place in idyllic conditions on Tuesday at Royal Cape Golf Club.
It was a battle of the big hitters in the Championship division. Nicole Loesch secured a 4/2 win over Western Province captain, Vanessa Smith to set up a final match against Alana van Greuning. Loesch took advantage of her ball landing twice in the dry water hazards. On another day, the result could have been different.
A first round bye gave Alana an easier route to the finals when she beat Southern Cape’s Maggie du Toit.
On the par 3, 15th Loesch found the green while Alana’s tee shot ended up in the greenside bunker and she was unable to get up and down for a par. A two putt for par ensured the win for Loesch.
It was the battle of Steenberg in the other two finals. In the Cecile Shaw Bowl final – h/caps 10-18, Di Brooks and Blanca Rivollier had a ding dong match. The match turned all square after nine holes with each player taking turns with the lead.
The turning point also came at the par 3, 15th. Brooks’s tee shot found the hazard; Rivollier found the centre of the green, however, her three putt meant that the hole was halved and Brooks remained 1 up with three to play.
The match concluded on the 17th when Rivollier’s approach over shot the green and had to settle for a bogey, with Brooks making a par.
There was a 3/2 victory for Steenberg junior, Ashleigh Mills over fellow clubmate, Karen Kearns in the Standly Cup – h/caps 19-30.”
