Newman in ascendancy again at Nomads SA Boys U19

7 April 2025 – Bryan Newman added the 2025 Nomads SA Boys Championship to his list of victories this year when he cruised to a thumping 9&8 win at Mossel Bay Golf Club.

The winner of the Africa Amateur Championship at Leopard Creek in February had a couple of close shaves in the quarter-final and the semi-final when he won on the 19th and 20th holes respectively, but he was imperious in the final, dispatching the man who had come so close to winning the Stroke Play section just days earlier, Dewan de Bruin.

The Pecanwood Golf and Country Club player, who has punched his ticked to the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in July thanks to his Leopard Creek triumph, finished in a share of fourth in the Stroke Play.

He saw off Jayden Jacobs 2&1 in the first round of the Match Play, and he won 4&2 against Minjun Heo in the second round.

That set up a quarter-final clash with Henru Walters, and they had to go to the 19th hole before Newman was able to prevail.

In the semi-final, he was up against the Stroke Play champion Roelof Craig, and that match went one further, to the 20th, before Newman emerged victorious.

The final against De Bruin saw him in superb form, and his 9&8 triumph was a measure of the state of his game.

“I can’t believe it actually,” said Newman. “I had quite a few close battles in the early rounds, but I was lucky enough to get through.

“It was a 36-hole final, and I was down early. But I knew I had a lot of holes to go. I was three down through four, but I had more than enough time to bring it back. It’s a long day of golf and 36 holes is a tough test.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to Nomads for their support in this event, and also a huge thank you to Mossel Bay Golf Club for an awesome course. It was a wonderful test.”
