Newcomer joins Kim at the top of the Leaderboard

19-year old Leján Lewthwaite, playing in her first Inter-Provincial, carded a great 73 to join Protea Kim Williams at the top of the leader-board in the qualifying round played today at Irene Country Club.

The 50th Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial started today when 16 teams in two sections played foursomes stroke play this morning and singles this afternoon to determine the four divisions of the tournament.

Predictable, Gauteng North Daisies topped the A Division on 538, after Henriëtte Frylinck and Kim Williams led the foursomes this morning, carding a 74. They were three strokes ahead of Gauteng Lions’ Lara Weinstein and Michelle Leigh and North West’s Nicole Becker and Bertine Strauss, both pairs on 77.

Second in the top division are North West, three strokes back on 541 with Gauteng Lions on 556 in third place and KwaZulu Natal on 559 lying fourth.

The surprise of the day was Benoni Lake’s Leján Lewthwaite, perhaps inspired by Connie Chen in her three-ball, returning a one-over par 73 to count Kim Williams out and win the individual competition.

Leján only started golf three years ago, after having represented South Africa at the European Optimist Sailing Championship in Poland in 2005. She is also an Eastern Gauteng hockey player.

The match play section of the Inter-Provincial starts tomorrow, Wednesday 29 September and the final matches will be played on Friday when the two top teams in each division meet. North West will be pulling out all the stops that day when they meet rivals and neighbours Gauteng Daisies in matches that always seem to go down to the wire.
