Mpumalanga keep promo bid on track at SA Mid-Am IPT

Mpumalanga kept their B-Section promotion bid on track as the second round action wrapped up at Middelburg Country Club on Tuesday.

The host union struggled to edge out a determined Boland team, but overwhelmed Limpopo to leapfrog overnight leaders, Gauteng North, in the B-Section standings.

Boland scored 3.5 points in the Foursomes, but Mpumalanga’s Brian Naidoo won 3&2, Philip Heyns triumphed 4&2 and Jan Jacobs prevailed 4&3 to close the gap on the competitors.

A 4&2 win from Jaco Buitendag left North West in the driver’s seat and halves from Eddie Daniel and Jasper van der Westhuizen secured a 6.5 – 5.5 victory for the side.

On the flipside of the three-way match, Mpumalanga handed Limpopo an 8.5 – 3.5 drubbing, while Boland took the sting out of their loss to the hosts by whipping Limpopo 9 – 3.

The battle between Gauteng North and Southern Cape ended in a 6-all draw.

Gauteng North took a 3-1 lead into the Singles, but the Garden Route side rallied to level the scores with a solid showing in the Singles.

Phillip Croukamp and Pieter Cooper scored the points for Gauteng North, while Ivan Williams, James Faber, William Malgas and Henk Geldenhuys countered for Southern Cape.

Gauteng North’s two half points came from Gustav Verster, who halved with Stafie Barnard, and Louis Jonck, who squared his game against Ian Norgarb.

Mpumalanga leads the log with eight points, while Gauteng North held on for second on five points and Southern Cape lurks in third on three points.
