Monja Richards wins Western Province Stroke Play Championship

Mowbray Golf Club hosted the Pam Golding Properties sponsored Western Province Amateur Stroke and Match Play Championship. Monja Richards (Mpumalanga) secured her first win of the 2013 season by beating Nicole Garcia (Ekurhuleni) in an exciting play-off. Nicole led the field after the first round with a one under par 71, the only sub-par morning round. Her afternoon 4-over par round gave her a final total of 147. Monja, who signed for a three over par 75 for the morning round, went out in the afternoon determined to improve her score.

Finishing on 147 after a level par round, she was now faced with a play-off. Both girls parred the 1st play-off hole. On the second hole, both tee shots were in the middle of the fairway. Nicole went for the pin which was tucked back left and cleared the water hazard, but unfortunately the ball rolled back into the hazard. Monja’s par was good enough to secure the title. Kim Williams (Gauteng North) and Maggie du Toit (Southern Cape) both came in one shot off the pace on 148, with Kim being the only player to better par during the afternoon (71).

Twelve year old Crystal Beukes (Boland) won the B Division (handicaps 10 to 18) on 161, a full 9 shots ahead of Alison vans Agnew (Western Province) and Viv Newell (Boland) who both finished on 170.
