Michelle wins Gauteng Nomads by six strokes
Michelle Leigh made a great return to provincial golf after a series of health setbacks when she won the Nomads Strokeplay Tournament held at Wanderers Golf Club on the 17th & 18th July.
She finished one under par 143 (73, 70), six strokes ahead of top SA Junior Lara Weinstein and Nicole Garcia, recently returned from the World University Championships in the Czech Republic, both carding 149.
SA Amateur Match Play Champion Bonita Bredenhann finished fourth on 151.
LGG President Gill van der Meulen reported that many of the players were exhausted after weeks of tournaments starting with SA Girls at the end of June, followed by Gauteng North Champs, followed by the SA Amateur match play and then the SA Open! Good experience for those considering joining the professional ranks where tournaments are played week after week and players are required to be extremely fit.
After a freezing weekend, the tournament days produced great Highveld winter weather. The course was not lengthened but the organisers stretched the tees to their full club length, the greens were fast and there were no preferred lies.
Gill reported that she also very pleased with the turnout for prize giving – it made a welcome change to have the Wanderers function room full to the brim with girls and a few parents and the new very friendly Gauteng Nomads president, Mr. Pat Frampton presented the prizes.
