Michaela wins the Nomads SA Girls Championship

KZN’s Michaela Fletcher lifted the 2012 Nomads SA Girls 54 hole Championship Trophy at Orkney Golf Club by four strokes from Gauteng North’s Carrie Park and the Under 16 Champion, Se Young Chun from Western Province. She is pictured here receiving her trophy from Nomads Chairman Mark Philp.

Michaela put her stamp on the championship when she carded a three under par 69 in the first round and went into round two leading the field by five strokes. She increased her lead to six going into the final round, but admitted that she wondered if she could withstand the pressure.

Both playing partners, Carrie Park and Se Young Chun birdied the first hole to put the leader further under pressure, but eventually Michaela managed to hold them off to win the championship by four strokes on 220 (69, 74, 77). In addition to her trophy and prize, Michaela wins the trip to the annual Duke of York Trophy to be played at Royal Troon, Scotland, from 10 to 13 September.

The 10 – 18 handicap Division was won by Brittney-Fay Berger from KZN on 250. Eight strokes back was Boland’s Cassidy Williams on 258, followed by Kim de Klerk (Ekurhueni) and Jhanelle Strydom (North West) on 259.

The Bronze Division (handicaps 19 to 24) was won by 11-year old Cara Ford (Gauteng) on 78 points (40, 38) and Danielle Johnson was runner up on 70. Earlier this year, Cara won the same division in the SA Girls’ Rose Bowl at Pearl Valley.

North West’s Roxane Schmidt lifted the Faith Daniel Copper Trophy with 71 points for the second year and the runner-up was Sarah Osborn (WP) one point back on 70.

Once again a white frost greeted players as they teed off at 7.15am but with no wind, playing conditions were excellent especially later in the day in the warm winter sunshine.

The next event on the WGSA calendar is the Sanlam SA Amateur Match Play Championship to be played at Benoni Country Club from 8 to 11 July. Entries close this week on Friday 29 June.
