Michaela the star of the SA girls
WGSA President Cynthia Rayner reports:
“The baby in our team surprised us all and posted the best score of the South African girls (two over par 74). Michaela Fletcher, playing in her first international event abroad, felt at home in hot KZN-type weather conditions and whilst she battled with her ball striking on the first few holes, she soon settled down. With only one birdie on her card, it was a really solid round of golf and she is feeling confident and happy. The leading girl is Lynn Carlsson from Sweden on two under par.
“Izel Pieters (75) only missed two greens in regulation (17 & 9), but struggled with the slow greens which resulted in six three-putts. She is striking the ball really well and playing confidently. Lara Weinstein (77) was very disappointed with her result today, but is hoping for a bit of luck tomorrow on the greens. She has the early tee-off tomorrow morning and hopefully she can put yesterday’s frustration of no birdies behind her.
“Haydn Porteous, lying tied 12th on two under par 70, is the best of the South African boys, and our Namibian neighbours, who sent three boys, has Ruan Huysamen tied sixth on three under par and three shots behind the boys’ leader.
“The course is not that long, but quite tricky with well positioned bunkers and quite a lot of ESA (environmentally sensitive area) declared hazards – even we can understand the signs BETRETEN DER BIOTOPE VERBOTEN! Course management is definitely the key.”
