Maseko qualifies for Egyptian Open after finishing 3rd in Egyptian Amateur

South Africa’s Thabo Maseko needed to make a par on the last hole of the 2010 Egyptian Amateur to make the playoff but he recorded a bogey on the difficult 18th hole and finished in third place hence qualifying to play in the 2010 Egyptian Open which forms part of the European Challenge Tour. Maseko recorded rounds of 69 75 and 73 for a three round total of 217.

Following a sensational birdie on the first playoff hole, England’s Jack Senior beat fellow Englishmen, Eddie Pepperell, to win the Egyptian Amateur Open. Both players were tied after 54 holes on 1 under par with totals of 215, and a sudden death playoff was required to separate the English pairing. The first playoff hole, a challenging uphill par 4 saw Senior hit a splendid 2nd shot above the flag and then sunk a 12 foot putt to seal victory.

Strong winds presented the players a real challenge during all three rounds of the Championship on the beautifully prepared course. The difficult scoring conditions resulted in the best rounds (69) of the week coming from South Afica’s Thabo Maseko in the opening round and Pepperrel in the second round.

The top 5 players secure invites to the 2010 Egyptian Open, part of the European Challenge Tour, from October 20th to 23rd.

Riekus Nortje also represented the SAGA at the tournament but struggled with rounds of 81, 80 and 73 and finished in a tie for 16th on a score of 234 (18 over par).
