Mareli take Free State title

Mareli Joubert won the 54 Hole Free State and Northern Cape Championship Esther Cutler Trophy played at Bloemfontein Golf Club on the weekend of 2 and 3 May. With rounds of 72, 70 and 74 on 216 she was three strokes ahead of Kim Williams on 219 and Connie Chen and Nicole Carlse tied in third place on 220. Henriette Frylinck on 221 in fifth position gave the stong Gauteng North squad four of the top five places at the event.

The 2009 Free State and Northern Cape Championship, extended to 54 holes for the first time, was played in beautiful Free State winter weather conditions, a little chilly in the morning with sun shine all day and no wind. The greens were a bit tricky having been overseeded in intervals, which resulted in different green speeds. The par of the Bloemfontein course is 72 with a course rating of 71.

Local favourite Lumien Orton, with rounds of 77, 77, 73 (227) won the closed championship, two strokes ahead of Merition Sandys, while Connie Chen claimed the Nomads Junior Championship. Gauteng’s Lara Weinstein was runner-up in this section.

Michelle Allers, also a Gauteng North player, scored 248 to win the 10 – 18 Division Championship with Hannalie Beukes one shot back on 249.

At the Annual General meeting held during the Championship, well know Free State player Carina Theron was elected President, following Marilyn McCallum whose term of office now comes to an end.
