Maggi du Toit lifts Boland Championship Trophy

Stellenbosch’s Maggi du Toit, playing off a three handicap, won the 2010 Boland Championship played in cold, windy and wet conditions at the Devonvale Estate golf course yesterday. She is seen here receiving her trophy from Boland Executive Bev Pienaar.

Included in the field were most of SA’s top women golfers, the exceptions being Kim Williams and Connie Chen who are in Argentina to compete in the World Amateur Team championships next week.

Going in to the afternoon round one behind the leader Nicole Becker, du Toit carded a 70, the low round of the tournament, to win the event on 144 (74, 70), two strokes ahead of Eastern Cape’s Iliska Verwey on 146 (75, 71). In third place was Free State’s Lumien Orton on 149 (74, 75). AM leader Nicole Becker could only return an 80 in the afternoon to finish on 153.

Conditions were not easy and due to the heavy rain on Sunday which continued into Monday morning, players were given preferred lies (one card length). The course had also been extended to 5400 metres for this event – the course rating changed from 71 to 73.

The Match Play continues today with an 18 hole final tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon.
