Lejan writes from the US

WGSA received news from Lejan Lewthwaite, presently studying at Texas State University.

I hope all is well back in South Africa, I managed to follow a bit of the IPT, wish I could have been there to play in it, it is a great tournament. The Lions came close but once again congratulations to Gauteng North:)

Prior to leaving SA, I said that I would email you both (Cynthia and Paddy) to update you on how my golf is going here in the USA. I have settled in quite well and enjoying every experience that I have over here.

So far I have played in two tournaments, the first one being the Golfweek Challenge held in South Carolina at Caledonia Golf Course, I finished tied 10th with scores of 68, 80, 74 on a par 71 course. Our team finished 4th after coming within one shot of the lead going into the last 9 holes of the tournaments. I was pretty pleased with my first college golf tournament as I also finished with the best accumulated score in our team.

I also found out today that I was named Southland Conference player of the month for September after my performance at the Golfweek Challenge. Here is the link: http://www.southland.org/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=18400&ATCLID=205311421 (See extract below)

I have just come back from my second tournament which was played over the last two days. It was held in Columbia, Missouri at the Old Hawthorne Golf Course. The tournament was the Johnny Imes Invitational. Our team won the event and I got my first individual tournament win with a four under par total and scores of 74, 71, 67 on the par 72 course.

I was very pleased with my result, I could not have asked for a better start to my university golf career. That being said I would like to thank you both very much, as I know that two and a half months ago I was back home in tears asking for your help to get into contact with any universities that may be able to offer me a golf scholarship. At this point I most definitely think that it was for the better as I am now playing for a Division I golf team.

I have three more tournaments left for the season and I will be sure to let you know how they go.

Kind Regards

Lejan Lewthwaite

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State freshman Lejan Lewthwaite was named the Southland Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for September, the league office announced Wednesday.

Lewthwaite, who hails from Johannesburg, South Africa (St. Dominic’s H.S.), shot a 68, the second lowest round in Texas State’s program history, in her first round of collegiate golf at the Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 11-13 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. For the tournament, Lewthwaite averaged 73.67 strokes per round, which earned her a top-10 finish and helped the Bobcats finish fourth. It was her only event during the month.
