Lara wins WP Junior Champs

Report from Deborah Martin

Glendower junior, Lara Weinstein, 76-72 (146), fired an even par final round 72 to lift the winner’s trophy at the Nomads WGWP Junior Championships held at Bellville Golf Club yesterday Sunday 8 January. She is seen here receiving her trophy from Nomads Captain Kevern Pappin.

Playing in her last year as a junior, Weinstein who was four shots behind the first round leader, Zayb Kippie, had a shaky start to her final round with four bogeys in her first nine holes but managed to pick up four birdies and take the title from Imkeleen Meyer.

Only one shot separated the first six placings.

Port Elizabeth’s Meyer, who plays off a seven handicap, 73-76 (149) put up a spirited performance and led the tournament during the final round until three bogeys blew her chances of lifting the trophy and she had to settle for second spot.

In-form Bianca Theron, who lifted the Boland Junior title at her home club Kuils River earlier in the week, finished in third position a further shot behind on 74-76 (150

Kippie, 72-79 (151) blew her four shot lead after round one with a triple bogey on the par 4, 2nd hole and had to settle for tied fourth, with Mowbray’s Sammy Barber, 75-76 (151) who had a mixed round with four birdies and four double bogeys

Bouncing back from a disappointing first round 78, Durbanville’s Kelly Erasmus carded a 2-over-par 74 (162) to tie with Tara Gribenow 76-76 (162) from Port Elizabeth.
