Lara wins Border champs on two under par at East London Golf Club

Top ranked Junior Lara Weinstein carded a four under 69 in the first round of the Border Championships played at East London Golf Club yesterday and with her one-over 73 in the afternoon, finished on two-under 144 to pick up the trophy.

Border President Louise van Niekerk reports. “Lara Weinstein won on 144, Nicole Garcia 145 on a count out from Alana van Greuning. Lara shot 69 in the morning and we are still trying to find out if it is a course record. Muffy seems to recall Wendy Warrington at an SA AM also carded a record.

Winners of the B and C Divisions were Shirley Pollock (166) and Athanthi Ndengane (193) respectively.

The 36 hole nett was won by Jamie-Lee Daniels from Uitenhage on 142. The Milnerton Golf Club team of Vanessa Smith, Cara Gorlei and Amy Henning won the team gross and nett. The Border Closed Championship was won by veteran Millie Zim.

“The match play has been very exciting today. Two Matches went to the 20th hole ( Demi Flanagan beat Sonja Bland). (Millie Zim lost to Chevonne Botha) and Jamie-Lee Daniels won on the 19th against big-hittig Talia Nel. Her drive was 15 metres from the green on the 16th and Jamie from way out at the 100m mark stuck it at the pin, halved in birdies!!”

More match play news tomorrow.
