Lara and Izel return to SA today but will be back in the USA for the Annika in January

Lara Weinstein and Izel Pieters return to South Africa today, only to return to the USA in two weeks. They have been invited to compete in the annual Annika Invitational to be played at the Reunion Resort in Florida from 13 to 16 January where will be accompanied by their fathers, Deryck Weinstein and Koos Pieters.

Lara was disappointed to finish tied 24th at the Orange Bowl which was marred by an indifferent 85 which included a quad, triple and double drop. She finished on 316, +22 (76, 85, 78, 77). The girls’ championship was won by Korean Hyo Joo Kim on -3, 281(68, 70, 69, 74).

Erica Lefson reports, “Lara settled down and had two good rounds with a few unlucky holes. The third round saw her find seven bunkers on the course which cost her five shot – this because once again the putts would not drop.

“Other than a birdie on the par three 12th where she sank a 18ft putt she did not convert any of her good shots to the green and she had about four opportunities from within eight feet.

“The final round was very much the same and especially towards the end where she was hitting the ball with so much more confidence and very few mistakes. A three-putt on the ninth and four misses to the greens saw dropped shots at the beginning of her round. Again some good shots to the green which were not converted to birdies.”

Haydn Porteus did well with a finish in the first 10 which gives him an automatic invite next year. He was tied eighth on -2, 283 (71, 72, 71, 69) The boys’ championship was won by Chilean Juan Cerda on and excellent -6, 278 (68, 70, 70, 70).
