KZN rule in the foursomes against Free State
DURBAN, 24 September 2009 – Kwazulu-Natal applied their home course advantage in the fair weather at Durban Country Club to edge out Free State and Northern Cape in the morning foursomes in the fourth round of the SA Interprovincial Tournament.
Jared Harvey and Daniel Green used the nippy Northwesterly wind to good effect for a 5 & 4 win to score the local favourite’s first scalp. Chris van der Merwe and Stephen van Heerden combined for a 1-up win and captain Ryan de Beer partnered with Gavin Sole for a 2-up win to see KZN pull 3-1 clear of their rivals.
Boland was 2-up on Gauteng North, but Rae Mackie and Herman Minnie got them back on course with a crucial 6 & 4 win and Derik Ferreira and Jacques van Tonder edged out Trevor Mahoney and JJ Senekal 3-1 to pull Northerns back for a 2-all draw.
Gauteng North is staring down the throat of relegation, having earned no points in this year’s competition, and must get the upper hand in this afternoon’s singles to stay alive in the tournament.
Defending champions Western Province also drew 2-all draw in the foursomes against Central Gauteng.
Werner Theart and Robbie Oosthuizen put the first points on board for Province, winning 2 & 1 from Norman Raad and Trevor Muggeridge. Steven Williams and Ryan Clarke evened the score for Gauteng 2 & 1 and Ryan Dreyer and Tyrone Ryan, who won 5 & 4, put Gauteng ahead before Adrian Ford and Nicol van Wyk combined for 3 & 2 to force the draw.
In the B-Section, Border and Ekurhuleni will start the singles at 2-all while Mpumalange face an uphill battle after a 3 &1 loss to Limpopo.
