KZN remain dangerous at SA U-19 IPT
KwaZulu-Natal enjoyed another productive day at the 2014 South African U-19 Inter-Provincial to edge into the B-Division lead in the B-Division, while Eastern Province strengthened their chances in the promotion battle at Krugersdorp Golf Club on Tuesday.
KwaZulu-Natal defeated Free State and North West in the first round and swept aside Border with another commanding performance to win 10.5 – 1.5.
The team was in a strong position after the Foursomes, having won three games and halving another.
Ruben Coetzer took the first scalp with a 7 & 6 win over Courtney Wicks and Joburg Junior Open winner Keagan Thomas followed suit when he downed Chuma Adonis 7 & 5.
Gregory Mckay defeated Jarred Scharneck 6 & 4, Ben Botha triumphed 5 & 3 against Riley Naude and Matt Saulez knocked out Michael Owen 4 & 3 to boost their tally even further.
Byron Toogood briefly stemmed the bleeding when he whipped Luke Mayo 3 & 2, however Jason Broomhead downed Tristan Naude 3 & 2 to and Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation’s Anuerin Gounden wrapped up the hiding with a 2 & 1 victory over Willem Boshoff.
Their third successive victory lifted KwaZulu-Natal to the number one spot in the log with six points, but Eastern Province edged within a point after also enjoying a fortuitous day.
Two points down to Free State and 2-all against Mpumalanga after the morning Foursomes, the EP players caught fire once the wet weather cleared and rallied to draw against Free State and beat Mpumalanga 8 – 4.
Tor-Bjorn Grundtvig and Kyle de Beer, playing at eighth and seventh respectively, won both their games, and Lukas Pretorius and JG Smit also enjoyed double triumphs.
Dehan Joubert beat Banele Mavuso 1-up, but lost to 5 & 4 to Free State’s Wilco Nienaber, Donavan Tam lost 3 & 1 to Mpumalanga’s Andre van Heerden, but defeated Therion Nel 1-up, while Nyameko Heshu beat Mpumalanga’s Nicklas van Wyk 2 & 1 and lost 5 & 4 to Steven le Roux from Free State.
Wian van Aswegen had two close calls, but lost 2 & 1 to Ivan Mare from Mpumalanga and 3 & 1 to Free State’s Franco Froneman.
The match between Free State and Mpumalanga also ended in a 3-all draw after Jan Hendrik Jacobs Jnr, Lee Morrison, Ryan Stenzel, Ivan Mare and Andre van Heerden rallied brilliantly in the Singles to square the match.
