KZN behind against Central Gauteng but look good to win
DURBAN, 25 September 2009 – Kwazulu-Natal will start the afternoon singles in the final round of the South African Interprovincial at Durban Country Club with a two point deficit after losing the morning foursomes to Central Gauteng 3 & 1.
The local favourites, who were promoted to the A-Section after last year’s IPT, are unbeaten in this year’s tournament and need just four and a half points to secure the title for the seventh time since 1960.
Steve Williams and Ryan Clarke beat Chris van der Merwe and Stephen van Heerden 5 & 4 while captain Ryan de Beer and Gavin Sole lost 1-up to Norman Raad and Trevor Muggeridge. Ryan Dreyer and Tyrone Ryan wrapped up their match against Michael Hollick and Gavin Brown at the final hole to win 2-up.
It also appears as if Josef Fourie’s squad are still struggling to recover from the 9½ – 2½ beating from the tournament favourites on Thursday.
Dean Burmeister and Wickus Myburgh combined for a 3/1 win over Ruan Bornman and Stefan Rall to hand Free State & Northern Cape their only win in the foursomes. Gauteng North will start the singles with a two point lead and a glimmer of hope of winning their first match in this tournament.
Defending champions Western Province finally found some form and hit out at Boland with a 4-0 drumming to possibly move to third place on the final log. This is quite a step up from the bottom of the log where last year’s winners camped out over the first two days of the competition.
It looks like the B-Section will go straight down the wire.
Ekurhuleni, the log leaders on eight points, lost 3½ – 1½ to Eastern Province, who are second in the log standings with seven points and chasing a two-pointer to clinch the tournament.
Both teams are under threat from Southern Cape though, who sits at number four in the standings with six points on the log but have two matches today.
The Southern Cape side took a 3-1 win against Mpumalanga but lost to Border 2½ – 1½.
No longer in the running for the title, Border could do their neighbours, Eastern Cape, a great service and build on their leading margin to win their singles matches, but with four possible points from two wins to win the B-Section, expect Southern Cape to come back fighting this afternoon.
The foursomes between Mpumalanga and Border ended in a two-all draw while North West got the upper hand against Limpopo to win the foursomes 2½ – 1½.
