Kim wins the 2013 WGWP Championship Match Play

Following the 36 holes Stroke Play Championship at Mowbray Golf Club, the top 16 qualifiers in both the 9 & Under (Championship) and 10-18 (Cecile Shaw Trophy) started their respective Match Play championships on Monday 18th March.

The quarter-finals were played on Monday afternoon with Stroke Play winner, Monja Richards beating Talia Nel (Modderfontein) 6&5, Michaela Fletcher beating Maggie du Toit 5&4, Kim Williams beating Magda Kruger 4&3 and Ji Sun Kang beating Nicole Garcia 1up.

In the semi-finals on Tuesday morning, Michaela Fletcher had a solid win over Monja Richards (7&6) and was 3 under par, after finishing the 12th hole to proceed to the finals. Whilst Kim Williams faced strong opposition from Ji Sun Kang, with the players 4 under and 2 under respectively, after 9 holes. Ji Sun, birdied the 16th hole to get the match back to dormie 2. A 20 foot putt from off the green on the 17th hole clinched the win for Kim (3&1) and saw her secure her place in the final.

In the Championship final on Tuesday afternoon, Michaela opened with birdies on the 1st and 3rd holes to go 2up. Kim came back with a birdie on the 4th, and the players both birdied the 6th hole. Kim lost the 8th hole and with Michaela having an eagle on the 9th, Michaela turned 2up. Kim won the 10th and 12th holes with birdies to get the match back to all-square and the players remained all-square until the 16th hole. Michaela’s tee shot found the bunker left of the fairway on the 17th hole and with a perfect tee shot to set up her par, Kim won the hole. On the 18th hole, Michaela found the trees left of the fairway and with Kim in the middle of the fairway, Michaela could not recover, leading to Kim winning the final match 2up.
