Kim wins her final amateur tournament on 8 under

Determined to play well at her last amateur tournament this weekend, Kim Williams finished on eight under par, carding 67 and 69 (136) to win the Mpumalanga Women’s Championships by seven strokes from Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini on 143 (74, 69). Gauteng’s Michelle Leigh, playing consistent golf, signed for 75 and 74 (149) to finish in third position.

Alana van Greuning returned a good first round score of 73, but could not stay out of the trees and bunkers on day two when she carded 83. Lara Weinstein, as she commented “had a disastrous first round” (83) but played with determination on day two to sign for a one-under 71 and finish fourth and top junior.

Rain during the week and overcast with reasonable humidity made conditions perfect for golf at Nelspruit Golf Club and the course was in excellent condition. However, the narrow fairways lined with over 200 different species of trees, and the course lengthened from 5195 to 5469 (par 71 to 72) made the course difficult for the longer handicapped players.

Bryanston junior Natasha Carlsson, returning an excellent second round of 77, won the Silver Division on 163 (86, 77) and another junior, 11 year-old Chiara Contomathios from Modderfontein whose handicap has dropped from 36 to 17 since March also showed great potential.

Sanet Geere won the Bronze division and Petro Swart the Bronze division with 51 points. 12 Year-old Elsame Scholtz was runner-up on 48 points.

Izel Pieters holed out her tee-shot on the par three fifth on the final day.

SA Girls go to Q-School

Kim Williams is well-prepared and her low rounds at Nelspruit will stand her in good stead as, together with Iliska Verwey, Henriette Frylinck and Nicole Becker, she leaves tomorrow for Spain where the girls will try to qualify for the professional Ladies European Tour in 2011. They will be in Europe for a month, playing in the various qualifying events. Connie Chen who has already turned professional will join them.
