Kim Williams on the come-back trail
After a disappointing SA Amateur in April, Kim Williams came back strongly this week to win The Pro Shop Gauteng 54 hole stroke play championship at Glendower Golf Club.
The course was set up to a very challenging length for the A Division. With rounds of 77, 74, 74 (225), the former SA Stroke Play Champion won the event by five strokes from Gauteng North team-mate Nobuhle Dlamini who carded 76, 77, 77 (230).
One again the Juniors featured at the prize table when KZN’s Michaela Fletcher and GNGU’s Magda Krüger tied in third position on 232. Michaela returned scores of 80, 76, 76 while Magda signed for 79, 77, 76.
Southern Cape’s Nicole Loesch was three strokes back in fifth position on 235 while WP Junior Cara Gorlei finished sixth on 236.
Gauteng President Les Rule reports. “This was our inaugural 54-hole stroke play championship which was played at Glendower Golf Club, one of Gauteng’s true Championship golf courses. This already challenging golf course was lengthened by 325m for the A Division players. They certainly found the additional length tough going and the greens were as difficult as always, they were running at 10 on the stimpmeter. The course is in stunning condition; the club and course management and staff bent over backwards to set us up with the most amazing facilities. It has been an absolute pleasure to hold our tournament here.
“The weather was fantastic with beautiful Gauteng autumn days although yesterday, the 36-hole day, was extremely warm for this time of year. We had a fantastic field with 60 A Division and 15 B Division players, including all South Africa’s top amateur golfers.
“The tournament went off extremely well with the only problems being the unfortunate disqualification of three players for playing off the wrong tee box.”
The B Division was won by 15 year old Cassidy Williams from Boland 0n 174 (92, 82) two strokes ahead of veteran Namibian Wilna Bredenhann on (176) 89, 87. Ekurhuleni’s Kim de Klerk was third on 182 (93, 89).
The match play begins today.
