Kim picks up the Sanlam SA Amateur Trophy – at last!!!
Centurion’s Kim Williams could not contain her delight when she was presented with the coveted South African Stroke Play Championship Trophy by Sanlam’s Jan Muller at Port Elizabeth Golf Club today. She signed for a two-under-par 70 to total 214 and to secure a win over Henriëtte Frylinck on 218 (71, 76, 71).
Going into the final today, Kim, Connie Chen and Lara Weinstein were level par on 144 for the two rounds. Scores see-sawed over the first nine, but Kim came back with 33 including birdies at 12 and 13 to finish four strokes ahead of team-mate Henriëtte Frylinck who, playing ahead, carded one-under-par 71 in the final round.
Namibian Bonita Bredenhann scored level par 72 today to tie with Connie Chen and Lara Weinstein on 219. These two players fell back on the second nine today to score 75.
Other level par 72 scores today in blistering heat, came from Tiffany Avern-Taplin and past Springbok cricketer, Johmari Logtenberg.
The 10 to 18 Division was won by Namibian Letitia Brink on 252 (82, 84, 86), two strokes ahead of local junior, Imkeleen Meyer, followed by 12-year old Eleonora Galletti on 256.
The match play championship commences on Wednesday when 64 players in the Championship division qualify to play. This includes 32 in the main championship, two flights of 16 players each and a new initiative allows first round losers to compete in the plate event.
The B Division match play is much smaller, with many of the competitors returning to school and not able to play.
Selections:WGSA President Erica Lefson announced that WGSA has invited three players from across our borders to make up an International Team to compete in the WGSA 72 Hole Teams Championships to be played at Gracelands, Mpumalanga at the end of May. The team is Nobuhle Dlamini (Swaziland), Bhavi Shah (Kenya) and Madina Hussein (Tanzania). She also invited young Ouname Mhotsha (Botswana) to compete in the Nomads SA Girls’ Championship to be played in Orkney from 24 to 27 April.
A further announcement was that Connie Chen and Kirsten Campbell will represent South Africa at the Jakarta World Junior Championships to be played from 1 to 4 June 2010.
