Kim and Iliska through to last 16 at Portrush.

Top-ranked South African Kim Williams had to play only 28 holes to get past her first and second-round ties at the Ladies British Open Amateur being played at Portrush this week. She now meets Royal Portrush member Stephanie Meadow who toppled the No 1 seed, Spanish champion Camilla Hedberg at the 19th yesterday.

Kim had good wins over Valerie Sternbeck (Ger) 4/3 and Myrte Eikenaar (Ned) 7/6. Defending champion Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) beat the World No 1 female amateur, 14-year-old Lydia Ko from New Zealand, and 16-year-old Lauren Taylor (Woburn) knocked out the World No 2, Cecilia Cho, also from New Zealand. Cecilia had earlier defeated the only other South African to qualify, Bertine Strauss, 4/3. And the talented Maguire twins, Leona and Lisa, both lost in first round of the match-play.

SA Match Play Champion Iliska Verwey is the other South African to reach round three and she meets Germany’s Sophia Popov this morning. She has earlier defeated Spain’s Patricia Sanz Barrios and Therese Koelbaek (Den) both by 3/2.
