Juniors show guts at SA Women’s IPT

Gauteng B and Western Province B’s young guns provided the fireworks in the second round of the 54th Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial, while Western Province A and giant-killers Border remained unbeaten at Royal Cape Golf Club on Thursday.

A-SECTION

Just a day after Western Province A scored a surprise 6 – 3 victory against Gauteng A, the local favourites pushed home their advantage to defeat title holders Gauteng North 5 – 4 in front of an approving home crowd.

The defending champions had the upper hand with a 2 – 1 lead in the Foursomes, the home side rallied to win four of the six games in the Singles.

Nadia Lawrence defeated Ruzanne van der Walt 3&2 and Sammy Barber triumphed by the same margin over Eugenie Clack. Zayb Fredericks defeated Danielle du Toit 2&1 and Amy Henning sealed the victory when she downed Magda Kruger 6&5.

Marne Clack gained a point for Gauteng North when she beat Jade Gray 6&5, while reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play champion Carrie Park downed Province number one, Cara Gorlei, 4&3.

In the second battle of the day, Gauteng B’s rising stars forced their match against the A-side into a draw.

Thirteen-year-olds Woo Ju Son and Kajal Mistry claimed first blood with a 7&6 win the Foursomes and while Chiara Contomathios (15) and Symone Henriques (13) combined for a 1-up win to give Gauteng B a 2-1 edge.

Henriques and Mistry won both their Singles, while Son rallied to halve her game against reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur champion, Ivanna Samu.

Gauteng A’s captain Lauren Bekker, Eleonora Galletti and Kaleigh Telfer claimed three crucial points, though, and the match ended in a 4.5 – 4.5 stalemate.

In the B-Division matches, KwaZulu-Natal whipped Ekurhuleni 7 – 2, while Boland took pole position in the log with a 6 – 3 victory against Gauteng North B.

B-SECTION

Border celebrated a first round victory against Western Province B and the celebrations continued after the side nearly scored a clean sweep against Eastern Province.

After gaining a 1.5 – 0.5 edge in the Foursomes, the Border players proved indestructible in the Singles.

Southern Cape Stroke Play champion Demi Flanagan downed Justine Botten 3 & 2 and SAGDB graduate, Siviwe Duma, beat recent Boland Open Stroke Play champion Jamie-Lee Daniels 2-up to gain the first two points for Border.

Duma’s sister, Yolanda Duma, thumped Imkeleen Meyer 2 & 1 and Zethu Myeki sealed their 5.5 – 0.5 victory when she defeated Minette Olivier at the last hole.

Border holds four points after the successive victories and will carry a two point advantage into the final round over Western Province B.

The young development side from Province bounced back from their first round defeat win their match against North West Province 3.5 – 2.5.

In Division 2 matches, Mpumalanga lost 4 – 2 to Free State & Northern Cape, while Southern Cape and Limpopo drew 3-all.
