Izel finishes tied 10th at the Harder

Sweden’s Lynn Carlsson won the 54 hole 2011 Harder German Junior Championship after a two-hole playoff against Marina Steutz (Austria). The two had tied at the top of the leader-board on five-under 211, three strokes ahead of the German pair, Larissa Skodda and Isabel Gadea, tied on 214. South Africa’s Izel Pieters finished tied 10th on three-over 219 (75, 71, 73).

The final round was played in hot weather conditions at the Golfclub Gut Neuzenhof, and the anticipated thunderstorms did not materialise.

Having started on the 10th, Izel carded a double bogey on the 13th and turned two over for the nine. Two birdies and an eagle then followed which helped to cancel the three drops on the front nine, and WGSA President, Cynthia Rayner, who accompanied Izel on her first international trip just over a year ago, was impressed at the amazing improvement in her golf game as well as her attitude on the course with the experience of four international events now under her belt.

Cynthia reports further, “Lara Weinstein, whilst still not near her best, settled for a final round of 74 (77, 79, 74 – 222), and a disappointed Michaela Fletcher carded a final round 76 (74, 72, 76 – 222).

“ Michaela struggled with her putting and her seven three-putts during this final round was her downfall. However, playing in her first international event abroad and finishing in 15th position in this high quality field of 45 girls, is to be commended.

“The boys’ championship, which produced top class scoring, was won by Victor Gebhard Osterby from Denmark on 14 under par, and the best South African was Haydn Porteous who was counted out of the prizes in fifth position on six-under par (70, 71, 69 – 210). Armand Scholtz, winner of the South African leg of this series played in March this year at Kingswood Golf Estate, the Kenako South African Junior Masters, tied 15th on two-under (74, 72, 68 – 214). Glen de Waal of Namibia shot an excellent final round of 64, but was pipped by a German lad who set a new course record of 63.”

The boys were accompanied by Gauteng Professional Robbie Stewart who regularly arranges opportunities for his pupils to gain international experience. He is pictured below with Haydn Porteous.

The girls leave for Scotland to compete in the British Girls Junior Championship at Gullane which starts on Monday.
