International Flavour to Glacier SA Amateur

Dylan Fritelli one of SA's hopefuls in this years Glacier SA AmateurNine international teams will be participating in the International Teams Event which takes place at the same time as the 36 hole stroke play qualifying round of the Glacier SA Amateur Golf Championship at Royal Durban Golf Club, starting on Sunday 2 March 2008, the South African Golf Association (SAGA) announced today.

“With the success of the World Amateur Team Championships in 2006, we have had a lot of interest from golf federations in other countries about participating in our premier events,” explained Neale Kunhardt, President of the SAGA. “Due to this interest, we decided to introduce the International Team Event this year, for the first time.”

The Glacier SA Amateur Golf Championships is being played from the 2nd to 7th March 2008 at Royal Durban Golf Club. The International Teams Event will be played on 2nd and 3rd March.

According to the SAGA entries have been received from England, Wales, Germany, Denmark, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia and obviously South Africa. There are two players to a team, each player’s score counts, the team with the lowest aggregate will be the winner.

Heading the challenge will be the Welsh pairing Nigel Edwards, the 2006 SA Amateur Champion, and Craig Evans. The two experienced Welshmen are ranked 26th and 96th respectively on the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings, and start as favourites.

The English team of Greg Blainey and Sam Stuart, both players in the English Golf Union’s ‘A’ Squad, are likely to be a formidable pair, both having won amateur tournaments in England last year.

Representing the host nation will be 17 year old Gauteng North amateur Dylan Fritelli and the 22 year old inform Jacques Blaauw. Blaauw, who plays out of Paarl Golf Club in the Boland, won the SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship, in testing weather conditions recently, and followed that up with a win two weeks later in the Free State and Northern Cape Open in Bloemfontein.
