Inter Provincial Press release Day 2

Another beautiful warm winter Highveld day greeted the players competing in the annual Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial on the first day of the Match Play at Country Club Johannesburg.

Gauteng North A dominated play against Gauteng A, winning 2 of the 3 morning foursomes matches and only losing one of the singles matches in the afternoon. The most exciting match was between the number one players, Kim Williams (Gauteng North) and Lara Weinstein (Gauteng) with Lara attempting to regain some team pride. However, Kim was having none of it, and the match ended 2 & 1 in her favour.

Western Province took on the new Union, Ekurhuleni and had a convincing win over them. Captain Vanessa Smith was undaunted playing Bonita Bredenhann, and turned 2 up. They were all square playing hole 16, but the big-hitting Namibian, playing out of Serengeti, was determined not to give an inch in the final holes, and finished 2 up.

North West who qualified last in Section 2 of the A Inter Provincial caused an upset against section winners, Southern Cape, beating them 7 & 2. Stalwart Elru Botha, from North West, caused some damage by beating Nicole Loesch, 1 up, as did Mae Cornforth who beat experienced Sandra Winter 2 & 1.

KwaZulu Natal met Boland in their first match of the tournament. KZN produced a spirited fight in the afternoon singles narrowly losing 3.5 to 2.5. Unfortunately this was not enough, as Boland had taken all 3 foursomes matches in the morning.

In the B Inter-Provincial, Gauteng North B took on their neighbours, Gauteng B and after each winning a foursomes match, the afternoon matches became very exciting with Gauteng North taking the honours 4 points to 2. The young Eastern Cape team, also playing in this section, took on Mpumalanga and had a most convincing win of 4.5 to 1.5.

Western Province B had a full house against Limpopo, winning all their matches in Section 2 of the B Inter-Provincial. Free State & Northern Cape won both foursomes matches against Border, and halved the afternoon singles giving a final result of 4 and 2.
