Inaugural mid Amateur Success

On a final day where the singles where lost to inclement weather, the Central Gauteng A side had it all but in the bag after progressing through the first 3 days of competition unbeaten. Being trailed after close of play on Thursday by host Union Ekurhuleni and close rivals Western Province, Central Gauteng needed to get only a half from their remaining two matches to secure victory in the Inaugural event. As it turned out, the final days singles being called off due to lightning did not change the position of the leading team and Central A where crowned champions. Central will hold the floating Trophy as donated by the host union Ekurhuleni until the next tournament scheduled for DeZalze in May 2007.

In what was regarded by all players in attendance as a resounding success, the first Mid Amateur (players aged 35 and above) Inter Provincial, with 8 Unions represented at the event and Central Gauteng fielding 2 teams (all at Union expense), has shown that there exists a very strong demand for this category of player and one can only expect the event to grow from strength to strength. With the players representing a very influential and diverse sector in the golfing and business sector, it is anticipated that potential sponsors will be very eager to get involved at this level.

The SAGA will, at their meetings in March, look to decide on the future of this event and if agreed to, it will become a National event with the full support of the National body.
