Iliska victorious at Durban Country Club
Iliska Verwey claimed her second consecutive provincial championship at the famous Durban Country Club on Sunday 27 March. She finished on four under 142 (69, 73) five shots clear of runner-up Kim William to win the KwaZulu Natal championship. Only a week ago, she had picked up the Stroke Play and Match Play trophies at the Western Province Championships.
KZN President Vaughn Harrington reported that the event was played in blustery and wet conditions. 41 players in the nine & under and 21 in the Silver 10 – 18 handicap division teed up on the 73 par Durban Country Club course which had been lengthened to 5431 meters, five holes playing off the men’s tees.
“The rain persisted, the greens became water logged with casual water on a few and the fourth hole was eventually being taken out of play for the day. Some players were most grateful for the par on this hole, deja vu, having been there for the SA Open.
“The rain which started at 7am was gone by 11 and the girls enjoyed a good day thereafter. There was some exciting golf played, the players found the greens quite tricky and a few complained about the length of the short 15th – good for their golf stretching themselves. The Rules officials were kept busy with the notorious bush and the casual water.
“Iliska played really nice golf and her playing partners Kim and Bertine pushed her in the last few holes but she was just too good.”
The KZN Junior Championship was won by Lara Weinstein on 158 (83, 75) with Izel Pieters two strokes back on 160 (76,84).
Natalie Singer the Silver division.
The match play commences today.
