Iliska Verwey fires 66 to lift WP Trophy

Southern Cape’s, Iliska Verwey came from behind to fire six birdies in the afternoon round of the Pam Golding Womens Golf Western Province Championships played at Clovelly Country Club and card a six-under-par 66, total 144, to lift the winner’s trophy.

The 22-year-old Verwey, formerly from the Eastern Cape and who was tied runner-up in the recent Border championships, improved on her first round by ten shots, 76-66 (144). She was eight shots off the leader Leanke Vlok after round one.

Vlok who held the first round lead by two shots with a two-under-par 70 had a disappointing second round 81, to fall out of contention and finished tied 17th.

South African number one player, Kim Williams, 73-70 (145), was tied together with KZN’s Tiffany Avern-Taplin, 76-71 (145), to take second place, one shot ahead of Gauteng’s Nicole Garcia on 75-73 (146).

Former South African and Western Province champion Yvette du Plessis fired the second best round of the tournament 69 and finished in fifth position with rounds of 79-69 (150).

Other Western Province players: Vanessa Smith (73-81) 154; Cara Golei (76/78) 154; Sammy Barber (75-80) 155; Rushda Mallick (79-77) 156; Amy Henning (83-73) 156; Lucy Lo (79-79) 158.

In the Executive Trophy, handicaps 10-18, Clovelly’s Alison vans Agnew (88-85) beat Milnerton’s Jeandré Visagie (87-86) in a sudden death play-off. Both players were tied on a total 173 after the two rounds. Paarl’s Saretha Maritz was third on 174 (88-86).
