Iliska picks up second ‘double’
After her convincing win in the KZN Stroke Play Championships, Iliska Verwey clinched her second consecutive “double” when she beat Tiffany Avern-Taplin in the final of the KZN Match Play Championships played at Durban Country Club this week. A former Eastern Cape champion and now playing out of Kingswood Golf Estate, Iliska Verwey continued her great form at the challenging Durban Country Club with victories over Gauteng North’s Anel Herselman 4/3, Alana van Greuning (Mpumalanga) 2/1 and junior Lara Weinstein (Glendower) 4/3 to meet top local player Tiffany Avern-Taplin in the closely fought final, winning at the 21st hole.
Tiffany had earlier recorded wins over team-mate Taryn Heyns 3/2, t Kim EWilliams 1 up and eventually junior Izel Pieters 4/3, belore narrowly losing to Verwey.
In the 10 to 18 handicap division, newcomer Francesca Cuturi who is being coached by Gavan Levinson, but playing out of Rand Park, won the event from Mo McCann at the 19th hole. The Bronze championship was won by Kloof’s Debbie Byrne with a 5/3 victory over Colleen Botes.
