Henning triumphs in Pam Golding Properties WGWP Stroke Play
Western Province’s Amy Henning will chase down the Pam Golding Properties WGWP Amateur Championship double after claiming the Edith Bowie Trophy in the Stroke Play Championship at Bellville Golf Club on Monday.
Successive rounds of 74 helped Henning to stave off Western Province number one Cara Gorlei and resurgent Bianca Theron from Boland for a one stroke victory on four-over-par 148.
Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member Theron opened with a two under 70 for a two stroke lead over Henning, while Gorlei lagged seven off the pace after an opening 77.
The 24-year-old Henning overcame the deficit with a successive 74 to edge out the two top golfers for her first provincial victory.
The podium finish followed on the back of a top 10 finish in the Cape Town Ladies Open in her debut on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.
Henning moved into the lead when Theron fell from pace with a triple bogey at the 11th, but she had to withstand huge pressure from Gorlei on the back nine.
The Milnerton golfer reeled in a string of four birdies from the 13th to get within striking distance and the two players remained neck-and-neck over the last five holes.
Gorlei missed the opportunity to force a play-off when she bogeyed the par-five 17th, though, and Henning sealed her triumph with par at the 18th.
Western Province’s Zayb Fredericks overcame a quadruple bogey at the par-four 14th with two birdies down the home stretch to sign for an even-par 72.
She claimed a share of fourth with Bianca Lohbauer from Boland (78,74), local golfer Katia Shaff (75,77) and Gatueng’s Kaleigh Telfer (75,77).
The Match Play Championship concludes on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Danielle Bekker from Chapman Golf Club lifted the Executive Trophy in the 10-18 Handicaps Division.
The Zimbabwe golfer carded rounds of 71 and 75 to finish two strokes clear from Boland’s Nadia van der Westhuizen, who registered rounds of 73 and 75.
Western Province pair Kaylah Williams (75,74) and Tessa Granger (73,76) tied for fourth on 149.
