Grant Wood wins his first national title

He started the final round of the South African Mid Amateur Championship today two shots off the pace. After a testing 69, three under par, forty three year old Glendower Golf Club member Grant Wood was crowned the 2010 South African Mid Amateur Champion.

This was his first national amateur golf title, having won the Central Gauteng Mid Amateur in February this year.

He played the 72 holes stroke play championship, over the well prepared ERPM Golf Club, in East Gauteng, in 284, four under par.

“The final two holes were really tough because a knew I was in the lead,” explained an excited

Wood after his round. “I had a twelve footer on the final green for a win, it was really tough, awesome,” said the jubilant winner who works for an advertising agency when he is not playing golf. “Mid Amateur golf is the best thing that happened to me,” he enthused.

The newly crowned champion went out in 33, three under par, dropped a shot on hole 12. He birdied the penultimate hole to go one shot clear.

Henk Geldenhuys, who recorded the best final round score, a 68 four under par, finished one shot adrift Wood on 285, one under par.

Defending champion Rob Oosthuizen (70) was two under par for his final round. His expected charge up the leader board in the final round did not materialise. He had to settle for third place, two shots behind the winner.

Overnight leader Norman Raad battled round for a disastrous (by his high standards) final round of 76, four over par, dropping down to fifth position overall.

(Mid Amateur golf is for golfers who are thirty five years of age or more).
