Glacier to Sponsor SA Amateur for Three Years

Glacier, a financial services company within the Sanlam group, has agreed to a three year sponsorship in which it has taken the naming rights to the country’s premier amateur championship, now to be known as the Glacier SA Amateur Golf Championship, the South African Golf Association (SAGA) announced today.

“We welcome Glacier to top end amateur golf. The sport provides a lot of opportunity and enjoyment to the business community and we believe that their involvement at this level of the sport will pay dividends on many levels in the long term,” said Neale Kunhardt, President of the SAGA.

Glacier SA Amateur Golf Championship is scheduled to be played at Royal Durban Golf Club from 2nd to 7th March 2008. The event comprises a 36 hole stroke play qualifier, in which 168 players will compete. On conclusion of the qualifier, the leading 64 players play match play to determine the 2008 Glacier SA Amateur Champion.

“Amateur golf has produced some exciting golfers over the years,” said Anton Raath, Chief Executive of the sponsoring company. “We believe that becoming involved at the top end of amateur golf dovetails nicely with what we are aiming to achieve in our business which is also focussed at the top end of the market. We hope that our support, at this level, will continue to encourage our young, up and coming golfers to continue to strive to become world stars, like Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman and others.”
