Gauteng North ties SAGA Juniors at Challenge Cup
The South African Golf Association Junior side and Gauteng North are deadlocked at the top of the standings at the Challenge Cup Teams Tournament after second round action wrapped up at Cullinan Golf Club on Tuesday.
The SAGA Juniors held the University Sport SA team to a 7.5 – 4.5 win, while Gauteng North scored a runaway 10-2 victory against Western Province to further their chances in this year’s event.
The SAGA Juniors took a 2.5 – 1.5 lead into the singles.
Dylan Mostert and Luke Mayo halved their respective games against Wynand Potgieter and Ryan Lane, while Matt Saulez, Hennie du Plessis, Jovan Rebula and Tristen Strydom added to the teams tally to keep the defending champions in the driver’s seat.
Gauteng North’s Divan Marais, Ruan Conradie, Ross Sinclair, Matt Bright, Marthin Scheepers and Leon Scheepers all reeled in victories in the singles after the side scored a clean sweep in the foursomes.
Although the SAGA Juniors and Gauteng North share the top spot in the standings on four points each, last year’s runners-up accumulated 16.5 game points over the last two days of competition to edge half a point ahead of the SAGA Juniors.
Meanwhile Central Gauteng came up trumps against the Presidents Team, but after taking a 3 – 1 lead in the foursomes, the winners were made to work for a 7.5 – 4.5 victory.
After Shane Martin halved against Adriel Poonan, Andrew Carlsson defeated Dylon Jacobs 1-up to give Central a three point advantage.
However, Hayden Garcia turned the tables for the Presidents Team when he defeated Werner van Wyk 4 & 3, and Jason Koeries and Evance Vukeya took the side’s tally to 4.5.
Victories from Basil Wright, Rupert Kaminski and Jarred Miltz, who defeated Nishalin Nelson 6 & 4, secured the victory for Central Gauteng.
