Gauteng North get off to good start at the 2006 SA U23 Teams Tournament

After a weekend of well needed rain, players got to see Somerset West basked in sunlight for the opening day of the 2006 SA U23 Teams Tournament.

On a day with very little difference to the conditions experienced in Gauteng, Gauteng North (GNGU) were convincing winners on day one over their neighbours Central Gauteng (CGGU). Having got off to the perfect start by taking all 4 foursomes games and needing only two and a half points out of the 8 on offer for the singles,GNGU took 5 of the 8 games in beating CGGU by a 9-3 margin to take top spot on the log.

Southern Cape, promoted to the A section after dominating the B section in 2005 nearly pulled off the surprise of day one when the held western Province, reigning Champions, to a 6-6 draw. Having taken a 3-1 lead into the singles, Southern Cape could only manage to win 3 of the 3 and a half points needed to win the match. Western Province showed gritty determination in fighting back to get a draw out of the first round. In the final match of the A section, KwaZulu-Natal just sneaked past “home” Union Boland in a tight match with KZN being victorius by a 6.5-5.5 margin.

In the B section, Free State & Northern Cape had the biggest winning margin by beating the Dolphins (EP & Border) by 10 points to 2. Limpopo disposed of North West by a 9-3 margin and Mpumalanga beat Ekurhuleni 7-5.

Forecast for the rest of the week is mild temperatures with a light SE wind blowing throughout the week.
