Frittelli and Knoll share first round lead
Defending champion Dylan Frittelli and fellow South African Leon Knoll share the first round lead in the 72 hole stroke play Barrett Amateur Championship with scores of 69, two under par.
The championship is being played over four days at the Algonquin Golf Course in St Andrews-by-the-sea, New Brunswick in Canada. The final round will be played on Saturday (1 August).
The two South Africans have a one shot lead.
Frittelli (Gauteng North) had six birdies in his pace setting round on Wednesday, of which three were on consecutive holes starting on the 14th. He also had two bogeys and a double bogey. The 19 year old University of Texas student and Irene Golf Club member went out in regulation 36 and in a two under par 33.
Knoll (Gauteng North), the 18 year old from Silver Lakes Country Club in Pretoria, played more consistently than the defending champion. He went out in 33, three under par, and came back in 36, one over par, made up of three birdies and one bogey. This was despite having to play with borrowed golf clubs as his have been missing since arriving in Canada on Sunday.
Also playing with borrowed clubs, for the same reason as Knoll, is 18 year old JG Claassen (North West Province), from Orkney Golf Club. The current South African and Zimbabwean Amateur Stroke Play Champion recorded a round of 73, two over par. This was made up of three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on the par 4 second hole.
The fourth South African in the field is 22 year old Fancourt golfer, Jake Redman. He also acquitted himself well finishing with a one over par 72. He eagled the hardest hole on the golf course, the par 5 fifth hole measuring 524 metres. In addition he recorded three birdies, four bogeys and a double drop.
The second round will be played today.
