Free State to face tough Boland challenge
Host Union Boland recorded a strong win against Mpumalanga, 8.5 points to 3.5 in Wednesday’s third round of the South Afican Country Districts Inter Provincial being played at Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate near Stellenbosch.
This win leaves Boland in third position in the A Section log with four points after two matches, the same as defending champions Free State and Northern Cape. The two teams clash in Thursday’s fourth round with the winner of this match the most likely winner come Friday.
Kwazulu Natal beat Eastern Province by 7.5 points to 4.5 in the only other A Section match. The winners moved to top of the A Section log however this represents a slightly distorted picture as the team lying second and third have a game in hand. All three teams have won four points so far.
In the B Section, the second round log leaders played each other, Limpopo emerging victorious against Southern Cape by 7 points to 5. Limpopo dealt their opponents a psychological blow when they won all four morning foursomes matches. Southern Cape had to win seven of the eight afternoon singles, a bridge too far for most teams in this format of play, and so it proved for the coastal team.
Limpopo are now the B Section logo leaders two points clear of three teams, Ekurhuleni, North West and Southern Cape.
Limpopo play North West on Thursday. If they win this match it should be game set and match, to use a tennis phrase, as far as the B Section is concerned. On Friday, the final day, Limpopo will play Border, a team that is yet to record their first win.
In the remaining matches, Southern Cape play Ekurhuleni on Thursday and Karoo are up against Border.
