Free State looking good in Country Districts
Free State and Northern Cape continued their good form from last year when they romped to a 9.5 points win to Mpumalanga’s 2.5 in the first round of the South African Country Districts Inter Provincial on Monday.
Playing the scenic Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate layout, just outside the Boland town of Stellenbosch, defending A Division Champions appeared confident and in ruthless form. They won all but three of the twelve games they played today, halving one.
As expected the host Union Boland put up a good fight dealing relatively comfortably with Kwazulu Natal, 7.5 points to 4.5.
On Tuesday the defending champions play newly promoted Eastern Province, who had a bye today due to only five teams participating in the A Division this year. A good win by Free State and Northern Cape will put them in a strong position to retain the title won last year.
In the B Division North West Province, Limpopo and Southern Cape all got off to winning starts. Southern Cape beat Karoo 6.5 points to 5.5, North West comfortably brushed Border aside 9 points to 3 and Limpopo won their match against the new boys in this Division, Ekurhuleni 7.0 points to 5.
The second round commences on Tuesday. The final round will be played on Friday.
