Fletcher gives chase at RB German Junior
KwaZulu-Natal’s Michaela Fletcher dropped just one shot in the second round of the RB German Junior to move into third place at the 36-hole mark of the prestigious World Junior Golf Series event in Germany.
The 17-year-old from Maritzburg Fletcher carded a three-under-par 69 to finish just five shots off the pace from Sweden’s Lynn Carlsson. The Swedish junior carded successive 68s to take pole at eight-under-par 136.
Fletcher picked up her first birdie at the par-four fifth to complete her front nine at the Gut Neuzenhof Golf Club in one under.
The reigning Sanlam Cancer Challenge Womens champion birdied the 10th and nearly aced the par-three 11th to move to three under, before dropping her only shot at the 12th. Fletcher immediately erased the lone bogey with birdie at the next hole and held par over the remaining holes to finish four shots behind second placed Scilla Rozsa from Hungary.
Meanwhile South Africa’s Lara Weinstein, who opened with a disappointing 80, launched to a tie for 13th with a much-improved 71 and joined South African junior Cara Gorlei at seven over 151. The 17-year-old from the Western Province improved on her first round 76 with a 75.
The final member of the South African team, Korean-born Ji Sun Kang, also enjoyed a better day at Gut Neuzenhof after her opening round was derailed by a 90 minute thunderstorm suspension.
Kang, a recent Sanlam SA Womens Amateur Match Play finalist, improved four shots on her opening 78 to tie for 17th at nine over 153.
In the Boys Division, Ekurhuleni’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout followed an opening 74 with a second round 75 to tie for 38th five over 149. Cameron Moralee from the Southern Cape, however, improved by four shots on his opening 82 to move to joint 53rd on 16 over 160.
