First round Foursomes dishes up surprises

The three underdogs coming into this year’s South African Inter-Provincial, sponsored by Tempest, have hit the front in the first round with a strong opening performance in the morning foursomes at Rustenburg Golf Club.

Gauteng North, the strong favourites ahead of the country’s largest team championship, and joint defending champions Boland and Western Province will all be starting the afternoon singles on the back foot.

Southern Cape will take a one point lead into singles after beating Boland 2.5 – 1.5, while the Western Province is two down to KwaZulu-Natal, who won the foursomes 3-1.

Central Gauteng, the champions in 2010, will also start the singles from a strong position after defeating Gauteng North 3-1.

In the B-Division, Ekurhuleni dominated the host union North West and Limpopo while the matches between Free State & Northern Cape, Eastern Province and Mpumalanga are pretty even after the foursomes.

Ekurhuleni scored a clean sweep and will take a 4-0 lead over Limpopo into the singles, and are in a threatening position against North West after winning the foursomes 3-1. The local favourites also drew 2-2 with Limpopo.

Meanwhile Free State & Northern Cape beat Eastern Province 2.5 – 1.5, but drew level with a 2-all result against Mpumalanga, who also ended in a tie at 2-2 with Eastern Province.
