Ferreira only SA player to make cut St Andrews Links Trophy
Derik Ferreira was the only South African to make the 36 hole cut in the prestigious 72 hole St Andrews Links Trophy, played at the home of golf in St Andrews, Scotland, which concluded yesterday.
The 19 year old Centurion Country Club member, who is currently ranked 2nd on the South African Golf Association (SAGA) Player Rankings, survived the 36 hole cut by one shot. This made him the only South African playing the final 36 holes yesterday. He eventually finished with a 72 hole total of 303, fifteen over par, which placed him in 49th place, tying with one other player.
55 players in all made the cut.
The international amateur competition was won by Scotsman Kier McNicoll with a 72 hole aggregate of 283, five under par. He recorded a final round of 68, four under par. Thanks to a birdie on the final hole, McNicoll won by one shot from Michael Stewart, Scotland, and Rudy Thuillier, France.
From a South African perspective, the performance of Jacques Blaauw, 22 year old Glacier SA Amateur Champion and SA Stroke Play Champion, was disappointing. He recorded a disasterous 81, nine over par, in the second round, played over the Old Course at St Andrews, which put paid to any chance he had of making the cut and thereby having any chance at winning the trophy.
