Ferreira follows in brother’s footsteps
It is not often that two brothers win golf tournaments within a calendar year but 2008 has seen both Tyrone Ferreira and now Stephen Ferreira lifting trophies albeit Tyrone’s win was on the Sunshine Tour and Stephen’s was in the Central Gauteng Open over the weekend.
Ferreira who plays out of Reading in Central Gauteng opened the tournament on Friday with a solid 74 and followed that up with rounds of 66 70 and 69 to finish on a very respectable score of 279 (9 under), one shot clear of Nicol van Wyk of Durbanville, Western Province. At the start of the final round van Wyk was 3 under par but he stormed to 6 under after ten holes with a run of birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie, and it looked like he was going to be the man to beat. The final eight holes saw van Wyk make 1 bogey and 7 pars while Ferreira played solid golf with 7 pars and one birdie which, in the end, gave him the edge.
Stefan Rall (Gauteng North) and Tyron Ryan (Central Gauteng) tied for 3rd place on 282 (6 under) and Donovan Pearse (Central Gauteng), Dean O’Riley (Ekurhuleni) and Trevor Muggeridge (Central Gauteng) finished a further shot behind on 5 under.
With so many players turning professional each year, the worry for amateur golf is that each year the strength of amateur golf gets weaker and weaker but this week proved that there is oodles of talent in SA amateur golf with 11 players shooting under par on the tough and long Royal Johannesburg & Kensington’s East course.
