EP and KZN enjoy fast start at SA IPT

Mzuyanda Zingela celebrated his 23rd appearance for Eastern Province in style as he led his charges to clean sweep in the first round of the 54th South African Inter-Provincial, sponsored by Tempest, while KwaZulu-Natal also enjoyed the perfect start in the promotion battle at West Lake Golf Club on Monday.

Eastern Province were 3-1 down after the Foursomes against North West, but took a 4-0 lead into the Singles against Limpopo.

Zingela, David Konzani, Hando Brophy, Fezekile Kana, Naldo Claassen and Sieg Human reeled in the victories in the Singles to beat North West 7-5. The side reeled in five Singles and halved a game against Limpopo to triumph 9.5 – 2.5.

KwaZulu-Natal also launched their promotion bid with success against Free State and Mpumalanga.

The coastal side led Mpumalanga 3-1 in the Foursomes and Siyanda Mwandla, Leorin Pillay and SA IPT veteran Greg Upneck quickly extended their advantage to 6-1.

Matt Saulez halved with Mark Ferreira, but further victories from Malcolm Mitchell, Derek Scullard and Gavin Sole secured a 9.5 – 2.5 result for the side.

Free State, inspired by their 7-5 victory over Mpumalanga, proved a hard nut to crack, though.

KwaZulu-Natal lost the Foursomes 2.5 – 1.5, but once again, the starting trio of Mwandla, Pillay and Upneck stepped up in the singles to turn the tide.

Mitchell and Gavin Sole added to their tally and wrapped up a 6.5 – 5.5 win.

Free State did come away with a 7-5 win against Mpumalanga and in the final B-Division match, North West beat Limpopo 7.5-4.5.
