Ekurhuleni the champions in waiting?
The form book is certainly anything but consistent in this year’s South African Mid Amateur Inter Provincial Tournament being played at Worcester Golf Club, especially in the A Section.
With no team showing any signs of taking control, that was until today’s fourth round, when Ekurhuleni beat Western Province 7½ to 5½ to take pole position in the race for team honours which is to be decided in the final round being played on Friday.
Playing in cold but near perfect golf weather the team from up country now top the A Section log with 6 points, one better than defending champions Kwazulu Natal who are in second place.
This means that Ekurhuleni, who play host Union Boland on Friday, need a win to be assured of this year’s title.
Kwazulu Natal could only manage to share the spoils against Central Gauteng , finishing with 6 points each. This means that their fate is almost entirely in the hands of Ekurhuleni tomorrow.
But who knows what will transpire tomorrow? When the form book shows that Ekurhuleni lost to Gauteng North, in the third round, Boland beats Gauteng North today, 8 to 4, then perhaps Boland should have the better of Ekurhuleni in tomorrow’s final round, we shall have to wait and see.
The B Section is all but done and dusted. Southern Cape were in dominant form today winning both their matches against Border and North West by 9 points to 3. This gave them a healthy number of games won but not enough points to unseat Mpumalanga from the top of the log. Mpumalanga beat Easter Province 7 to 5 cementing themselves firmly at the top of the log on 9 points, one more than Southern Cape.
With one more match to play, Mpumalanga are one point clear of Southern Cape who have the day off on Friday. Free State and Northern Cape, with six points, are in third place and mathematically have no chance of knocking Mpumalanga from the top of the log irrespective of how the log leading team performs.
