Ekurhuleni in total command at Nomads U-13 Champs
Ekurhuleni’s young chargers produced another scintillating performance at Royal Durban Golf Club to stretch their overnight advantage into an almost insurmountable lead in the second round of the Nomads South African U-13 Championship on Tuesday.
The defending champions powered to an 18 stroke lead over Central Gauteng in the first round with an opening 382.
Zamokuhle Nxasana (72), Casey Jarvis (73), Yurav Premlall (74), John-William Blomerus (75) and birthday girl Kiera Floyd (79) combined for a second round 373 to put a lot of distance between themselves and the chasing pack.
Ekurhuleni leads on 35 over 755, with 2013 champions Central Gauteng a distant 35 strokes behind and Southern Cape a further nine strokes adrift.
Jarvis, who leads the Individual Competition on two over 146, countered a double bogey at the second and four drops with five gains for a second successive 73.
Nxasana reeled in a hat-trick of birdies to offset three bogeys and finished within a stroke of his team-mate on 147.
“I was a little nervous over the first four holes this morning, but Zama and Casey laid a brilliant foundation for us and Yurav, John-Williamd and Kiera offered fantastic support,” said Ekurhuleni manager, Jack Turton.
“The players have impressed me immensely with their conduct and I must mention Christopher Begnall, one of our three rookies. Although Christopher was caught up in a little slow play and could easily have been frustrated, he remained calm and committed.
“We are 12 furlongs down and in the home straight and there is no need for us to bring out the whip. The players just need to bring us past the finishing line to claim our second successive title.”
