Ekurhuleni and Boland with early advantage at Erinvale

20 April 2019 – Ekurhuleni flexed their muscles on the opening day of the 2021 SA Senior B-Division Inter-Provincial as Boland opened their Super Seniors campaign with a clean sweep at Erinvale Golf Club on Tuesday.

SENIORS
GolfRSA adopted a Single Medal Match Play format to facilitate the Senior and Super Senior A- & B-Division Inter-Provincials this year under the current Covid-19 regulations.

Ekurhuleni was quick of the mark to bank the first 2 points on offer.

Gary Herbert (85), Rodney Smith (79), Robbie Massiceti (71), Leonard Pienaar (78) and Evan McKenzie (77) racked up the wins for the Roses.

Kevin Monk lost to Johan Bezuidenhout (76), Keith Brown (80) and Anton Boyce (80) countered for Northern Cape, restricting Ekurhuleni to a 5 – 3 win.

Mpumalanga and Free State drew 4 all in their opening day tussle.

Kobus Clarence (75), Jan Jacobs (78), Brian Naidoo (74) and Steve Smit (78) were the rainmakers for Mpumalanga, while Nico Odendaal (83), Hannes Spies (84) and Johnny Barnard (82) kept Free States chances alive. Jan Greyling, playing at number one, guaranteed the draw when he returned a round of 75 to edge Eddie Daniels by three shots.

North West, who had a first-round bye, joins the action on Wednesday and will tackle Free State in their opener. The log leaders will enjoy a relaxing day while Mpumalanga and North West go head-to-head.

SUPER SENIORS
Boland made a dream start, routing Free State with four convincing wins.

Union president George Bezuidenhout led from the front and carded 82 to seal a seven-shot win against Johan Henning. Peter van Coller (75), Tony Bailey (79) and Dewald Botha (84) followed suit to deliver the 4 – 0 result.

Eastern Province and North West also enjoyed productive days.

Northern Cape managed to halve two games, but Johnson Madikana (85) and Zolile Nqana (76) took control to ensure a 3 – 1 result for Eastern Province.

North West was in the driver’s seat with Johan Becker, Joe Wood and Christie le Roux producing respective rounds of 85, 80 and 81 against Ekurhuleni, but Russel Moss, playing at number one, spoiled their winning streak when he edged Bennie Kleynhans by one shot with a round of 85.

Boland will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the log in their second round match against Northern Cape. Eastern Cape will also be hunting more success against Ekurhuleni, while Free State will look to rebound against North West on Wednesday.
