Eagle Canyon win Nomads CGGU Junior Interclub champs
Eagle Canyon juniors broke Modderfontein Golf Club’s stranglehold in the annual Nomads Central Gauteng Golf Union Junior Interclub in November, denying the defending champions a fifth consecutive victory at home.
In addition, the newly crowned champions claimed victory with a six man team, instead of the usual eight.
The 23rd edition of the popular competition drew a record entry of 15 teams and Modderfontein reinforced their chances with four teams.
Under normal circumstances, the best six scores would count in the unusual format, which sees players compete in Individual Stableford off scratch and having their handicap added after completion of the round.
Having no leeway, the Eagle Canyon six-pack was under pressure to perform and delivered.
Luka Stanisavljevic, Matthew Wierenga, Brandon Weir, LJ van Vuuren, Emilio Pera and Bryce Leach combined for 212 to claim a one point victory over Modderfontein.
However, the host club could not fail to impress with second, third, fourth and seventh place finishes.
