Dreyer’s run ends in 4th Round
Ryan Dreyer beat Nigel Edwards in his 3rd round match this morning (Thursday) in the 114th Amateur Championship, being played at Formby Golf Club north of Liverpool. But he bowed out in the afternoon 4th Round, losing to Englishman Stiggy Hodgson in a closely contested match that went to the final hole.
This ended a remarkable run of form for the 37 year old Glacier SA Amateur Champion, from Johannesburg.
He scraped through qualify for the match play on Tuesday, finishing the 36 hole stroke play on 147, three over par, which turned out to be the cut score. This was after making a disastrous 77, five over par, in the first round.
He then played steadily through the match play stages.
His match against the 2006 SA Amateur Champion, Welshman Nigel Edwards, lived up to its billing of being an enthralling encounter. Dreyer eventually, after the 20th hole, emerged the victor.
He was not so lucky this afternoon, losing to Hodgson, on the final hole, one down.
Matteo Manassero, the 16 year old Italian from Verona, and winner of the Qualifying earlier in the week, continues to impress. He has won through to tormorrow’s quarter finals where he comes up against a formidable opponent, in Englishman Tommy Fleetwood. Fleetword finished runner up last year and will not be giving up easily on any opportunity to play in the final on Saturday, which will be decided over 36 holes.
