Derik Ferreira becomes SA’s number 1 after another victory at the North West Open Stroke Play

Derik Ferreira - SA's number 1erik Ferreira continued to show that he deserves his 7th place ranking on the World Amateur Golf Rankings and the number 1 spot on the SA Rankings when he won the North West Amateur Open at Rustenburg Golf over the weekend. This was Derik’s second successive tournament win after capturing the Northern Amateur a fortnight ago.

A strong field of 168 players teed up on Friday to play in the 72 hole stroke play event. The weather interrupted event was shortened to 54 holes and scoring was high as birdies were hard to come by due to punishing rough. The course condition all but insured that the cream would rise to the top and at the end of the weekend it was Derik Ferreira who showed his class, as he lifted the trophy on a score of 211 (5 under par), with rounds of 70-69-72. One shot behind Ferreira was the surging Dewald Smit, from the Free State, who closed with a 69 (the low score of the day).

North West Golf Union must have been proud of their boys as Christo Peens from Potchefstroom finished in 3rd position on a score of 214 (2 under) and Pieter Cooper (the Rustenburg Course Manager) finished in a tie for 4th with Coenie Stoop (Central Gauteng), Edward Matthews (Ekurhuleni) and Chris Hurter (a German national who has spent the summer playing amateur golf in South Africa and who heads back to Europe for their golf season) on a score of 215 (1 under).
